Tonight I've watched Homecoming and Lover's Walk, and, just a random observation here, but WOW. Buffy and Angel's relationship was really ALL OVER THE PLACE this season, wasn't it?
First Buffy's seeing someone and moving on. Then with the kissing and the back togetherishness. And then with the "We'll never be friends" crap. Then with the kissing and the back togetherishness and the kimonos. Then Angel with the breaking up with her in the sewer. Then with the showing up at Prom--but still leaving! Then with the fevered, poison-haze-induced, "I was wrong, I can't leave you" to the "Oh no, I fed on her, I REALLY need to leave". Those poor crazy kids. They have it so bad for each other.
Joss really IS right, as much as I "hate" him for it. How long can you go on playing "What if Romeo and Juliet had lived?" You reach a point where it just begins to be ridiculous. You have to let it go. And yet, the torment never ends. And even worse than the torment, is the hope.
I always hated that Angel left the show--although I loved Angel in its own right. There's no doubt. The two feelings exist simultaneously, and yet are completely separate in a way that only my strange brain can make them. But I always felt BtVS was seriously lacking after his departure, and not just from his lack of presence, but also from the changes in Buffy due to his departure. She was never really quite the same after that. She lost an aspect of vulnerability without Angel. We lost that emotional link to her. We lost our "in" to the deepest, most compassionate and loving, open places in Buffy's heart. Oh, we glimpse them every now and again, but mostly, she just becomes more and more closed off and brittle, until by seventh season she's become someone nearly unrecognizable to most of us (IMO).
